Ethan Hawke to Receive Variety Virtuoso Award at Miami Film Festival GEMS
Variety will present Ethan Hawke with the Variety Virtuoso Award at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) the Miami Film Festival GEMS on Sunday, November 2. The event will take place at Miami Dade College Wolfson Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The honor will be for his achievements over more than three decades in the industry across film, theater and television. His new FX drama series “The Lowdown,” which he stars in and executive produces, will debut on September 23 and “Blue Moon, his upcoming film with longtime collaborator Richard Linklater, will release on October 17. The 12th Miami Film Festival Gems is scheduled October 29 – November 5, 2025, and will continue its tradition of celebrating this year’s top films and award contenders.
Hawke will participate in a Q&A about his work with Variety Co-Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh. “Variety is honored to sit down with Ethan Hawke for a wide-ranging conversation about his career at the Miami Film Festival,” said Setoodeh. “With more than 70 credits in films — we all have our favorite Ethan Hawke movie — and a career that includes TV, theater, directing and even writing novels, he is the definition of an artist who continues to reinvent himself. There is no one more deserving of the Variety Virtuoso Award.“

Miami Dade College celebrates cinema in two annual events, Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival GEMS (October 30 – November 3, 2024) and Miami Film Festival (42ndannual edition April 4-13, 2025). The Miami Film Festival is considered the preeminent film festival for showcasing Ibero-American cinema in the U.S., and a launch pad for international and documentary cinema. The annual Festival welcomes more than 45,000 audience members and more than 400 filmmakers, producers, talent and industry professionals. In the last five years, the Festival has screened films from more than 60 countries, including 300 World, International, North American, U.S. and East Coast Premieres. The Festival also offers educational opportunities to film students and the community at large.
